Catch A Canoe & Bicycles Too

Established in 1972, Catch A Canoe & Bicycles Too  provides a wide selection of kayaks, canoes, outrigger, and bicycles for exploring beautiful Big River estuary and beyond. This is the Mendocino coast’s only full-service outdoor shop, serving locals and visitors alike.

Located on the grounds of The Stanford Inn by the Sea, a dog-friendly eco-hotel, the business occupies the only privately owned land on the eight-mile Big River estuary. A 7,000 acre tract, now Big River State Park,  was purchased in 2002 through the efforts of numerous state, federal, and nonprofit organizations, as well as thousands of private donors.

Today, the Mendocino Land Trust works in partnership with the California Department of Parks and Recreation to manage and protect this valuable and beautiful area.

Dogs are welcome to ride with their paddling people. For stability, an outrigger canoe is recommended; dogs can sit on the platform atop the canoe or on the floor. A new “canine cruiser” canoe can accommodate up to four dogs on a large, padded platform.

The Big  River flows into the ocean and is brackish, so bring fresh drinking water for you and your dog. Water bowls are provided on request. In general this is a calm river; no whitewater rafting here.
