Leashed dogs are allowed on the grounds, paths and along most of the waterfront of the Tallac Historic Site, once the summer playground of three elite San Francisco families who built estates here in the late 1800s.
The Pope, Valhalla and Baldwin estates can be admired from the exterior at any time, with some buildings open for viewing and interpretive activities in summer.
The Pope Estate serves as an interpretive center. Exhibits, living-history programs and demonstrations are featured in summer, along with concerts, the Great Gatsby Festival and other activities in the Valhalla summer arts festival.
The site is adjacent to the Kiva picnic area and Taylor Creek Visitor Center, and there are many hiking and biking paths in the area. The area, administered by the U.S. Forest Service, is also popular for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in winter.
Directions:
Tallac Historic Site is located approximately 3 miles north/west of South Lake Tahoe on the lake side of Highway 89 N/Emerald Bay Road. The entrance is on Heritage Way across from Fallen Leaf Lake Road and marked by a large wood sign that reads “Tallac Historic Site."
