Marin County

What a difference a bridge makes. Marin County, across the Golden Gate from San Francisco, is a little different and a little “out there” in many ways—but certainly not by accident. Residents have fought hard for many decades to create and preserve the vast tracts of open space that contribute so much to the views and the outdoor lifestyle cherished by most who live here.
And what dog wouldn’t give his spots to be a Marin resident? With twice as many dogs (an estimated 60,000) as school children, you might say that Rover rules the road—or at least the trails and open spaces that available for dog-friendly recreation. Tens of thousands of acres are, including 24 preserves within the Marin County Open Space District, 130 miles of trails managed by the Marin Municipal Water District in the Mount Tamalpais watershed, and various beaches, trails and tracts under jurisdiction of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.
From redwood forests to ocean beaches and rugged, trail-laced headlands, this land is custom-made for visitors with four-legged friends.

Swimming is not for every dog. Some dogs are afraid of water and others, such as greyhounds, have a tendency to sink. That said, there are a ton of water-loving dogs out there who will love to go on hikes that include a swim, or who love to paddle around the family pool. more »
There’s no need to work up a sweat on a waterfall hike, especially if the hike is a family-friendly, one-mile round trip to Fairway Falls, also known as Arroyo de San Jose Falls. This seasonal gusher offers its best rewards just after a hard rain, when a swath of water takes a fierce, 30-foot tumble through a forested ravine into a rock-lined pool and the fast-flowing, foamy creek below.
