Camping, Sunset Style

Sunset Magazine camp book

Like many of us who read Sunset, you are most likely inspired and somewhat intimidated by those oh-so-perfect homes, gardens and recipes showcased on the magazine’s glossy pages and online. Could we do that? Well, maybe some of it. But when it comes to camping, we can all (including canines that relish an extended outing) learn a thing or two from “Camp Sunset: A Modern Camper’s Guide to the Great Outdoors.”

The just-published book was inspired by a contest the magazine ran a couple of years ago inviting readers to apply for a camping weekend by writing an essay on why they’d like to do so. Turns out, many of the applicants were “camp curious” but either so inexperienced and didn’t know where to start, or had a spouse who stood firm in his or her desire not to venture beyond resorts.

The result: a beautifully illustrated book so convincing that you can’t look at it without planning a trip under the stars. How-to advice for novices covers all the basics, from organizing and provisioning to pitching a tent, setting up a camp kitchen and catching a trout to sauté with browned butter and capers back at the campsite. Experienced campers will gravitate immediately to the book’s 52 camp recipes guaranteed to impress family and friends. While only one page addresses camping with dogs, we at DogTrekker find the entire tome worthy of inspiring the whole family, canines included, to indulge in a time-honored American tradition.

More from our friends at Sunset:

• The latest issue of Sunset Magazine announces the finalists in the 2016 Sunset Travel Awards, which honors excellence and innovation across the Western United States and Canada. Included are the finalists for best Hotel for Pets, one of which is DogTrekker.com favorite Tenaya Lodge at Yosemite.

• Sunset has moved! While the editorial headquarters moved from its longtime campus in Menlo Park to Jack London Square in Oakland, their main gardens and test kitchen has now opened in the very dog-friendly Cornerstone Sonoma. Pack up your pups and check them out.
