Sacramento’s Big Gift

Almost every city and shelter in California sponsors a holiday adoption event, but few are as fortunate as Sacramento in having a benefactor like Kim Pacini-Hauch, a pet-loving real-estate agent who is picking up the cost of pet adoption through Dec. 31 as part of the Front Street Shelter’s “Home for the Pawlidays” event.

Adoption usually costs $85 for dogs and $65 for cats. Scores of dogs, cats and rabbits were adopted during the first few days of the event, and more than about 650 currently in foster care will be brought into the shelter as space opens up.

Across town, the Sacramento SPCA has brought back its dog-friendly Yappy Hour fundraising events at local brew pubs and restaurants. Next up: an “ugly sweater” meet-up from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Dec. 7 at Der Biergarten, a popular German-style outdoor venue. Contests, raffles and prizes are on tap, with a portion of purchases going to support the shelter.
