Rattlesnake Canyon Trail

Rattlesnake Canyon Trail

This is probably the most popular canyon trail hike in the Santa Barbara front country. It's especially popular with dog walkers due to the year-round stream and lush habitat that provide water and shade along the route. The lower sections can get very crowded on weekends, so go early and go high if you don't want to feel like you're in a parade. The round trip to and from the end point at Gibraltar Road is about 5 miles. On clear days, you'll be entertained along the way by hang-gliders soaring overhead.

Directions: From the Santa Barbara Mission, turn right on Los Olivos, bear left on Mission Canyon, turn right on Foothill Boulevard then left again onto the continuation of Mission Canyon. In .4 miles, turn right on Las Canoas. In 1.2 miles, look for the sign for Scofield Park and the Rattlesnake Canyon Wilderness Area. Park on the right.
