Garrapata State Beach

Garrapata State Beach

Garrapata Beach, part of a state park of the same name, is a frequent subject for painters and photographers, who often can be spotted behind their easels and tripods as they capture the dramatic seascapes along two miles of beach front. Gray whales often pass close by during their January-March migration. There are many hiking trails in the area. Dogs must be on leash.

Directions:
Garrapata State Park is on Highway 1, 6.7 miles south of Rio Road in Carmel (18 miles north of Big Sur). Parking and trail access is via 19 numbered turnouts along Highway 1, all on the ocean side. Gates 18 and 19 are for beach access.
