Mendocino County is big and diverse, but there’s something extra-soothing about making base camp within sight or sound of the sea. Settle into a king pet suite at the Beachcomber Motel & Spa in Fort Bragg, and both you and your four-legged loved one will enjoy direct access to the fenced, off-leash dog park right outside. Two suites have doggie doors opening onto gated outdoor kennels, and all pet suites come with a doghouse, pet beds and other woof-friendly amenities (not to mention fireplaces, microwaves, refrigerators and giant TVs for human occupants).

Sister property Surf & Sand Lodge is close enough to the ocean’s edge to whale-watch from your private balcony or patio, and while there’s no dog park, canine guests get a warm welcome. Across Pacific Coast Hwy 1, the Beach House Inn is framed by an estuary with lush, natural creek views and the beach just a 500 foot walk away. The nearby Emerald Dolphin Inn is close to bluff-top walking paths and comes with an unusual amenity: an 18-hole miniature golf course and arcade!

Elsewhere along the coast, the high-end Stanford Inn by the Sea in Mendocino extends a warm welcome to a wide variety of small-species pets, from iguanas and parrots to pot-bellied pigs. If yours is a dog, she’ll be provided with dog bed, feed bowls and sheets to protect beds and other furniture, and you’ll both sleep within sight and sound of the sea.

Not far away, history and coastal scenery merge at Little River Inn, a Victorian-era property where all rooms have ocean views and canine visitors are welcomed with treats, beds, bowls, towels, cover sheets for furniture and designated walking areas with waste-bag dispensers.
