German Shepherd Rescue of Northern California

By: DogTrekker Staff

Over the last 11 years, German Shepherd Rescue of Northern California has saved over 3000 dogs—301 last year alone, thanks to a dedicated network of volunteers, trainers, and sympathetic veterinarians. Unlike many groups who cherry-pick the cutest and most quickly "adoptable" dogs from shelters and leave the rest to their fate, GSRNC strives to save them all, from the very old or terminally ill GSDs who receive loving hospice care as needed, to the young and rambunctious who might need more manners before they're ready for a home.

One remarkable story is the saga of young Odin here. When this handsome boy was a tiny puppy, his breeder accidentally backed over him with a truck, fracturing both his hind legs and his pelvis. The breeder brought him to a vet in Redding to be euthanized, but the vet thought he deserved better. GSRNC stepped in and, between their resources and the vet's deep discounts, the puppy got the treatment he needed and went into foster care, where he received ongoing physical therapy. One thing led to another, his foster mom fell in love with him, and now he has a forever home with her. Eight months after his injury, he's still getting physical therapy, in between blissful gallops on the beach.

GSRNC has regular adoption events in Sacramento, Danville, Redwood City and San Jose, offering a chance to meet the dogs currently in search of a home. Since German shepherds range in temperament from easygoing couch potatoes to the drive, energy and work ethic of military dogs, the rescue works hard to ensure that dogs don't just find a home, but a home where they and their people will be happy together for the dog's whole life. Check out some of their currently available dogs at upcoming adoption events.
