Alfresco dining is a natural in San Diego’s mild climate, and virtually every restaurant in town with an outdoor deck or patio welcomes well-behaved canine companions. There’s no more scenic place to start than Pier Cafe, which sits, yes, right on the water at the end of a pier at Seaport Village. The New England-style menu features lots of fish, and the outdoor seating area is dog-friendly.

In the Little Italy area of town, Indigo Grill, part of the Cohn Restaurant Group, services innovative modern Latin cuisine in a stylish environment complimented by a dog-friendly patio with fire pit.

What could be more inviting than a dog-friendly restaurant with “dog” in its name? We’re barking about the Lazy Dog, a family-friendly place at Westfield Mission Valley. It’s a big establishment with a dog-friendly patio and special treats for your pooch in case you forgot to bring your own.

As a visitor to San Diego, you’ll likely be strolling through lovely Balboa Park, where you’ll want to stop for brunch, lunch or dinner at Prado, located in the historic House of Hospitality.. The huge outdoor terrace is dog-friendly, the menu upscale and the ambience pure Old San Diego.

To steep yourself in still more history, mosey over to the Cosmopolitan Restaurant in the hotel of the same name. It sits in the heart of Old Town San Diego State Historic Park, and its dog-friendly (and heated) Orchard Terrace is a quiet place surrounded by fruit and olive trees, grapevines and wisteria.  On the menu: Mexican favorites, American grill and fresh seafood.
