Animal Rescue Recon

Meet Abby, an extremely cute little dachshund-terrier mix, who, true to her gene pool, is more explorer than couch potato — despite the fact that she's been blind and deaf since birth. As with many such dogs, it's never occurred to her that there's anything "wrong" with her; she gets along great with other dogs, loves the dog park, and really enjoys going for walks.

Abby, who's about a year and a half old, faced a bleak future when she was picked up as a stray, but luckily was whisked away to safety by Animal Rescue Recon of Oakley, where she's now in a foster home. Since their start in September of 2012, they've been working hard to save dogs and build community connections in East Contra Costa County, and have placed 190 rescues in loving homes.

A volunteer-based organization, Animal Rescue Recon is already thinking ahead for 2014 — specifically, this year's Maddie's Pet Adoption Days, coming up this spring. Says ARR's Treasure Carlson, "We would love to start interviewing short-term fosters so we can pull as many dogs as possible out of the shelters and find them loving homes during the Maddie's event! We adopted out 54 dogs last year, and would love the opportunity to exceed that number this year."

If you're in the East Contra Costa area and would like to help out, email animalrescuerecon@gmail.com. And if Abby is the girl of your dreams, let the good folks at Animal Rescue Recon know!
