A few of our favorite places to camp

New discoveries are nice, but so are places to which you and your four-legged buddy return time after time. Here are a few of our paw-tested faves.   Carson Pass/Highway 88: One of the most scenic roads in the Tahoe area, Highway 88, south of the lake, climbs to the summit of 8,652-foot Carson Pass, rolling past many lakes and campgrounds along the way. Caples Lake, Silver Lake and Kirkwood Lake are beauty spots with Forest Service campgrounds as well as quick proximity to several scenic hiking trails and small mountain resorts where you can grab a meal.  Read more.

Say hello to fall on Lake Tahoe’s South Shore

If you’ve been to Tahoe, you know the lake is virtually surrounded by cabin and cottage motels and resorts in every price range, many of them dog-friendly. That said—and despite the fact that virtually every Tahoe restaurant with outdoor seating welcomes well-behaved fur babies—you’ll inevitably run into “what to do with Fido” conundrum if you want to go to a casino, play golf or otherwise engage in activities where four-legged companions aren’t allowed. You’ve Got A Wine-Tasting Place in Placer County

Stretching from Roseville to Lake Tahoe, Placer County is an up and coming wine region as well as a recreation magnet. Most of the 20 dog-friendly wineries and tasting rooms on the Placer County Wine Trail are north of Interstate 80 around Lincoln, Loomis and Auburn. Read more.

Strike Gold With El Dorado County Wines

Although sprawling El Dorado County has quite a few craft breweries, it’s better known for its wine, apples and other fresh produce. The EDC Wine Trail features more than a dozen wineries on both sides of Highway 50 that welcome dogs and provide scenic rural vistas in the process. Read more.
