City Sidewalks

A holiday trip to San Francisco wouldn't be complete without pressing your nose to a department store window at iconic Union Square. Sure, there's lots of gorgeously displayed merchandise to admire, but there are also… puppies! Tomorrow through Jan.1, a highlight for anyone who loves dogs (or cats) is the Macy's Holiday Windows display featuring adoptable animals from the San Francisco SPCA.

If you’re a city person, another spirited place to be is Union Street from 3-7 p.m. Dec. 3 for Union Street Fantasy of Lights. The luminous extravaganza features roaming characters, merchant open houses (dogs welcome in many stores) and lots to ogle as the switch is thrown on thousands of lights outlining several blocks of Victorian storefronts. (If you’re shopping for gifts, you’ll appreciate the gift of validated parking; see website for details.) Photo: "Macy's Window" – Jennifer Jamieson Photography and Sweethardt Photography
