It’s been a weird and disappointingly dry winter in snow country, but now comes what many are hoping will be a “miracle March.” A good dumping of powder last week saw ski areas buzzing, and with more white stuff in the forecast, there might be time yet for a wintry outing with your best friend.
Our suggestion: Aim high. At Kirkwood (elevation 7,800 feet), you can get outfitted on site and cross-country ski or snowshoe with your dog on two designated trails. Another good bet for late-season snow is nearby Hope Valley, where 60 miles of groomed and un-groomed trails on national forest land are available at no fee.
Park and get started at Hope Valley Outdoors, where the vibe is very dog-friendly and the localized advice right-on. Nearby Sorensen’s Resort, with its charming log-cabin architecture and canine-accommodating policies, makes an ideal base camp for a spring fling. Now through mid-June, stay two midweek nights and get a third night free.
