Cavallo Point view of Golden Gate Bridge

Panoramic views of the blocky white San Francisco skyline and the heart-stopping swoop of the Golden Gate Bridge are a dime a dozen in Marin County. Ramble as you may, they don't get much better than along the extensive trail system surrounding Fort Baker, site of a 19th-century military installation recently converted into the luxury (and dog-friendly) Cavallo Point Lodge at the Golden Gate in Sausalito. Park on East Road or at the adjacent Bay Area Discovery Museum and follow the Drown Road bike and hike trail to the ridge-top above the cluster of beautifully restored Fort Baker buildings. When you've worked up a sweat, clamber down the Chapel Steps Trail to the hotel's Murray Circle restaurant and Farley Bar, where you and your four-legged companion can relax on the veranda over a refreshing drink, small plate or other dish from Chef Joseph Humphrey's acclaimed kitchen.
