Floating Lights

Floating Lights

Lighted boat paradeAre you up for a brisk early-evening adventure? Lighted boat parades are a tradition in many of our region’s waterfront communities, and they always draw a shoreside crowd. Boaters spend days preparing their vessels with decorations geared to dazzle spectatorsódogs included, of course. Watching a lighted boat parade is as much fun as watching Fourth of July fireworks (only colder). So bundle up, pack a Thermos of hot chocolate, find a waterfront viewing spot and enjoy† Rover’s reaction to the novel sights floating past.

Among this year’s maritime spectaculars are the Oakland/Alameda Estuary Lighted Yacht Parade, the Vallejo Yacht Club’s Lighting & Boat Parade, the Santa Cruz Yacht Club Lighted Boat Parade, the Petaluma Lighted Boat Parade, Sacramento Lighted Boat Parade and the Delta Reflections Lighted Boat Parade in Stockton, all on Dec. 3. If you miss those, you might be able to catch the Monterey Lighted Boat Parade on Dec. 4. The San Rafael Parade of Lights and Discovery Bay Lighted Boat Parade both take place on Dec. 10. Coming up after that is the Holiday Lights & Boat Parade in San Francisco on Dec. 17. Photo: Santa Cruz Boat Parade - Richard Masoner (CC)
