If you're visiting San Francisco with a four-legged friend over the next week or two, these events are ideal for an outing.
Chestnuts on Chestnut, set for this Friday evening on Chestnut Street, is a charming neighborhood affair with entertainment, holiday window displays, a doggie costume parade and, of course, an appearance by the man in red.
Saturday's Union Street Fantasy of Lights is an luminous extravaganza featuring roaming characters, merchant open houses and lots to ogle as the switch is thrown on thousands of lights outlining several blocks of Victorians and storefronts.
Pictures with Santa make good keepsakes and also benefit good causes. On Dec. 4, a photo event at Doc's Clock benefits Grateful Dogs Rescue. On Dec. 11, trot on over to the Sir Francis Drake Hotel , where you can use your own camera to snap photos of your four-legged friend with "Santa Paws" from 2-4 p.m.
Fido may not know what to think, but you'll want a warm coat on your back and a waterfront vantage point on the evening of Dec. 17, when the Holiday Lights Boat Parade comes floating past. When it's over, both of you will be ready for a warm drink-and a fireplace, if you can find one.
Need a holiday tree? Dogs on leash are allowed at Fort Mason Center, where parking is (usually) easy and the twinkling Guardsmen Christmas Tree Lot, a tradition for 60 years, donates proceeds to programs for at-risk youth.
