Take a Break at Fort Baker

Dog vacation at Cavallo Point Lodge in Marin County

Panoramic views of the blocky white San Francisco skyline and the heart-stopping swoop of the Golden Gate Bridge are a dime a dozen in Marin County. Ramble as you may, they don't get much better than along the extensive trail system surrounding Fort Baker, site of a 19th-century military installation converted into the luxury (and dog-friendly) Cavallo Point Lodge in Sausalito. Park on East Road or at the adjacent Bay Area Discovery Museum and follow the Drown Road bike and hike trail to the ridgetop above the cluster of beautifully restored Fort Baker buildings.

When you've worked up a sweat and admired the postcard-worthy views, clamber down to the hotel's Murray Circle restaurant and Farley Bar, where you and your four-legged companion can relax on the veranda over (or under, as the case may be) a refreshingdrink, small plate or other dish from Chef Justin Everett’s acclaimed kitchen.
