The Clarksburg wine region along the Sacramento River just 10 minutes south of the state capitol is expanding like a supernova, with another boutique winery opening up every month, it seems, along the scenic Freeport-River Road.
Our latest dog-friendly find: Miner's Leap Winery, open weekends for tastings in a beautifully landscaped, multi-level lawn and patio area outside a century-old barn. Pack a picnic or some snacks, sample the merchandise and choose a bottle to enjoy in a shady spot just over the levee from the river.
In the town of Clarksburg, check out the Old Sugar Mill, a restored beet processing facility that was moved piece by piece from Utah in 1935 and reconstructed on the site. Today it houses ten wineries and a custom crush facility, all under one roof. The mill gets lively on weekends, when tasting rooms are jammin' and special events often are staged. Dogs are welcome on leashes or in carry bags. Bring water for Fido and food to enjoy with the wine you select. Zoning laws preclude a restaurant from opening on the premises, but there ís ample seating for picnics.
