Berkeley Humane is a private, nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization governed by a dedicated volunteer Board of Directors that work on behalf of Berkeley Humane and the animals in their community. They have provided complete care (rescue, rehabilitation, placement) to homeless animals since 1927.

Berkeley Humane serves the people and animals of the community by providing life-saving programs for cats and dogs, cultivating compassion, and strengthening the human-animal bond.

Berkeley Humane is Here for You and Your Pets
“Walking through our shelter today was a bit emotional. It was quiet – a word probably never used before to describe our shelter,” says Jeffrey Zerwekh, Executive Director, Berkeley Humane.
“Except for the animals that were transported yesterday from a shelter an hour north of Sacramento, the kennels are empty. While this is something we would normally celebrate after a robust adoption weekend – today it brings about a bit of melancholy. more »
DogTrekker operates on the principles set forth in its 4-Paw Promise: “To deliver local and accurate listings, provide engaging and actionable content and focus on social commitment to the communities we serve.” The “social commitment” part of that promise encompasses more than 300 rescues, shelters and adoption centers listed on our website and mobile app. We provide visibility, awareness campaigns, adoptathon coverage and fundraising opportunities to many of these. Here’s a short list of organizations that would deeply appreciate your holiday remembrance. more »

Meet Pearl! After an active youth, this cute min-pin (miniature pinscher) mix is now ready for cuddly golden years, with plenty of easy walks, soft beds—and hey, lap time would be perfect! Pearl is a loving, well-behaved girl who's ready to share a sweet life with her own person.

Pearl is currently living in a foster home, but if you think you're the one for her, meet and greets are just a phone call away. Thanks to a generous donation, Pearl’s adoption fee has been sponsored, so don't let that stand in your way—to find out more about Pearl: Click Here.

Pearl is just one of the many dogs (and cats) helped in their hour of need by the good folks at Berkeley Humane. more »

Nick, waiting for a homeNick is just one of the dogs currently in the care of the Berkeley East Bay Humane Society while they're waiting for their homes—and just one of the dogs who will be helped in a big way by the 15th Annual Bay to Barkers, coming up Sunday, July 29. For 15 years now it's been the East Bay's premier event for dogs and their humans to see and be seen, all in support of Berkeley Humane's adoption programs, training classes, veterinary services and more to help the community's animals in their time of need. DogTrekker will be there and we hope to see you!   Photo: Nick—Berkeley East Bay Humane Society  more »
Dog lying down on command from trainerDo you tell your dog to “come,” or do you use the command “here?” Does Rowdy understand the difference between “down” and “off?” What’s your opinion on pinch collars? more »
Funded entirely by donations, the Berkeley East Bay Humane Society has been helping dogs, cats, rabbits, birds and other critters in need, since 1927—as well as offering an acclaimed dog training program and other services. All that seemed doomed in 2010 when a devastating fire struck the shelter. But overwhelming support from volunteers, donors and the community, as most dramatically seen in July at the annual Bay to Barkers event, has enabled the organization to literally rise from the ashes and continue its lifesaving work. more »
