Big Meadow East is 8.8 miles round trip.

The Big Meadow trailhead is on the north side of Highway 89 approximately five miles south of US 50.

This part of the trail is open to hikers, mountain bikers and equestrians.

Follow the paved road from the parking lot for 100 yards before going right onto the TRT.

The next 2 miles climbs gently with switchbacks through a mostly thick forest of predominantly Jeffrey pine and red fir.

Watch for TRT signs at the junction with the Grass Lake Trail. From there, you will pass through several small meadows with many wildflowers and two rock outcroppings that make great viewing spots of Lake Tahoe and mountains to the east and south.

After a total of 4.4 miles, you will reach Saxon Creek Trail (aka "Mr. Toad's Wild Ride).

For an added challenge you can go an extra mile (2 round trip) to Freel Meadows for more open views and wildflower viewing; otherwise find a nice spot for lunch and some relaxation before returning to your car.

If you haven’t tried snowshoeing, what are you waiting for? You don’t have to invest in your own equipment if you’re new to the activity. Snowshoes are available for rent from most ski shops; all you need are some warm snow boots. On designated trails with packed snow and flat terrain, walking in snowshoes is almost as easy as walking in street shoes. more »
