Boating on this Golden Gate Park lake has been a popular pasttime since the Victorian era. It's also said to be haunted by the "Lady of Stow Lake,"  a distraught mother who in the late 1800s jumped in the water to save her toddler, who had fallen in. In September 2011 the boating operation shut down after 68 years with one local franchisee. The new operator does not allow dogs, but there's still lots to sniff and see (including ducks and geese) around the shoreline. Dogs are to be leashed when walking around the lake.

Remember Heidi? Her family members did, and commemorated their beloved collie's life with a headstone at the Presidio Pet Cemetery, final resting place of hundreds of animals owned by soldiers and families stationed at this famous San Francisco military post.
