Bidwell Park is a sprawling 3,618-acre municipal park in Chico that stretches along both sides of Big Chico Creek Canyon for five miles. If you’re planning a morning visit with your dog, you’ll want to know about the off-leash hours from 5:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. in Lower Park — plenty of owners take advantage of this early window when things are quieter. There’s also off-leash play allowed anytime along the undeveloped north side of Upper Park Road, as long as your dog responds to voice control.
The park divides into two very different experiences. Lower Park is the more developed section with better access and facilities like Sycamore Pool and the Bidwell Golf Course. Upper Park is wilder and less manicured, which makes for more interesting exploration if you and your dog enjoy rougher terrain. The canyon itself is genuinely beautiful — Big Chico Creek runs through it and creates natural swimming holes, though dogs aren’t allowed in the designated swimming areas like One-Mile or Five-Mile to keep things safe for swimmers.
The trail system is extensive, so you can choose between casual walks or more substantial hikes depending on your dog’s fitness level and how much time you have. Early morning visits mean fewer crowds and cooler temperatures, which matters if you’re going during warmer months. The park really does feel like the natural center of Chico — locals come here regularly, so you’ll likely see other dogs around, especially during peak hours.
Since Upper Park has special rules to protect its undeveloped areas, it’s worth understanding what those are before you go. The off-leash options give you genuine flexibility compared to many parks where dogs are always leashed. Bring water for your dog, especially on warmer days, since you’ll be away from facilities if you venture into the canyon areas.
