This beach is known for its fishing pier and concrete freighter, The Palo Alto, built for use in World War I and towed here in 1929 for use as an amusement center.
The freighter has been closed to the public since 1932, but the pier is open for fishing.
The beach is a popular swimming spot.
There is a long stretch of sand backed by bluffs, a covered picnic facility and an interpretive center.
The weather is always cool and can be changeable; layered clothing is recommended.

Take the State Park Drive exit from Highway 1 in the neighborhood of Aptos.
Leashed dogs are allowed on this beach.
