Lots to wag about in tri-valley

Dog and person walking in the Tri-Valley

For those who live in San Francisco, Sacramento and most points in between, the Tri-Valley region, with its rolling topography and semi-rural character, offers a refreshing change of venue for weekend explorers traveling with their dogs. Wine-tasting and hiking top the activity list for most visitors, but four dog-friendly communities (Pleasanton, Danville, Livermore and Dublin) spread across three adjacent valleys also command attention, especially when it’s time to eat.

Start in Pleasanton, an affluent community of about 77,000, that’s as pleasant as its name suggests when it comes to dog-passionate. Pop into Murphy’s Paw on Main Street to pick up a special treat for your four-legged friend, then take a break to dog- and people-watch from an outdoor table at one of many pup-friendly restaurants, including Oasis Grille & Wine Lounge, Handles Gastropub or Tomo Sushi Bar & Grill. Starting May 4 and continuing through September, your dog will also be welcome at 1st Wednesday Street Parties featuring more than 150 vendors.

Nearby Danville gives Pleasanton a run for the money when it comes to laid-back vibe and dog-friendly venues. You and Daisy can contemplate the next leg of your visit over award-winning California cuisine served in the shady courtyard of The Peasant and the Pear, whose name reflects a contemporary take on rustic bistro classics. Chow Danville is an affordable, farm-to-table venue, while Danville Station Firehouse Bar & Grill features one of the largest outdoor dining areas in town (dog-friendly, of course). And don’t pass Molly’s Pup-Purr-ee without stopping in for a little something to reward your pet for her patience.

In Livermore, several venues around historic Blacksmith Square, including Swirl on the Square and Blackhawk Grille, offer dog-friendly outdoor seating where you can also enjoy live music in summer.

After all that sitting, a visit to a dog park might be in order. You’ll find seven of them in Livermore, one in Dublin, one in Danville and one in Pleasanton.
