Snow-capped peaks set the backdrop for glorious winter outings in UpState CA. Redding sits at the heart of this eight-county Shasta Cascade region that’s rich with forests, mountain ranges, parks and pure adventure.

While waterfalls and lakes draw many summer visitors, the snowy season creates fresh opportunities for backcountry skiing, snowmobiling, sledding and more. Happily, select lodging properties here cater to families with four-legged friends, too.

Mount Shasta tops many travelers’ must-see lists, and for good reason. It’s a majestic site in any season, but especially in the winter. Take in some views from Mt. Shasta Ski Park, an under-the-radar favorite with affordable tickets and routes that suit families and beginning skiers.

While some trails at Lassen Volcanic National Park close in the winter, parts of the park remain open and leashed dogs are allowed on paved roads and parking areas. Lassen Peak is a popular spot for skiing, snowboarding, ice climbing and winter hikes. Our friends at Choose Redding recommend Eskimo Hill, in Lassen National Forest, for sledding and snow tube excursions.

Redding is the gateway to Shasta Cascade adventures, and several properties here in UpState CA accommodate pups. The Sheraton Redding Hotel at the Sundial Bridge gives a four-star welcome to furry family members, providing water bowls, welcome treats, and pup bedding, crates and leashes for guest use. Don’t miss the weekly yappy hour gatherings or the dedicated dog menu at Mosaic, the hotel’s signature restaurant. For pet-friendly rooms and picturesque Sundial Bridge views, check out the Red Lion Hotel Redding near the Sacramento River.
