Eco all the way

By: DogTrekker Staff
A vibrant dog park bathed in sunlight features abundant greenery with mature trees, offering ample shade for leisurely outdoor activities. In the distance is a well-equipped playground that presents an additional activity area. An inviting picnic table spreads out nearby, ideal for enjoying meals al fresco or taking relaxing breaks from play. A neatly-placed trash bin aids in maintaining the park's cleanliness for everyone's enjoyment. Dominating the scene is a generously wide dirt path gracefully curving through the expanse of grass, promising exploratory walks and lively fetch games.

An entire industry has grown up around dog products that claim to be environmental friendly. Google around, and you’ll find everything from the practical (biodegradable pick-up bags) to things you could probably live without (chemical-free aromatherapy wipes). We’ve sniffed like bloodhounds to uncover a few green products every DogTrekker can enjoy.

Hemp makes a fashion statement in today’s world, and you don’t have to inhale to get a kick out of hemp dog collars from Earth Doggy or a hemp dog bed filled with fiber made from recycled plastic bottles from Bambeco. Greener Pup’s line of eco-friendly dog beds also sport recycled plastic stuffing; they’re covered in a choice of recycled fabrics and can be customized to fit your particular pooch.

When it comes to toys, green dog parents know to stay away from plushies filled with polyester fluff. A more sustainable and long-lasting alternative is to be found in sturdy, recyclable Orbee-Tuff products from PlanetDog, a socially conscious vendor that devotes 25 percent of each purchase to the training, placement and support of service dogs.

A freshly bathed dog is a sweet smelling dog, and you’ll find as many eco-friendly shampoos on the market as there are breeds of canines. One line we can strongly recommend is widely available Buddy Wash. Coconut-based and infused with botanicals and other natural ingredients, it leaves your dog’s coat shiny, soft and smelling well, take your pick from lavender and mint, rosemary and mint or green tea and bergamot. Luscious stuff.
