We know you like to travel with your canine companion; that’s what DogTrekker is all about. In the past year, we’ve loaded up our four-legged friends, hit the road and uncovered some great places to stay and play on trips that took us out of our usual weekend orbits. From hikes among the redwoods in Humboldt County to dog-friendly botanical gardens on the Central Coast, our aim is to pave the path so you’ll never have to encounter a sign reading “no dogs allowed.”
Every Californian, and most visitors to our state, want to make the iconic drive from Santa Cruz to Santa Barbara on coastal Highway 1 at least once. We examined how to do it with dogs in a June 6 issue themed “Coasting With Canines” that looked at everything from dog-friendly beaches, resorts and even an art gallery in Big Sur; to a podcast-guided, dog-friendly walking tour in Santa Barbara.
In May, we spilled the kibble on how to have an intoxicating weekend in Mendocino County, where “Wine, Wilderness & Woof” rule the day. Moving inland, we traveled up Interstate 5 and sniffed out dog-friendly opportunities in Redding and the gorgeous portion of the southern Cascades known as the Shasta-Cascade region.
We also tracked down the best dog-friendly activities and lodging in five Gold Country counties plus Sacramento and Folsom. The gist of it: Get off the highway and you’ll discover what we did—vast tracts of public lands for hiking, hundreds of small-production wineries and small towns.
Heading up the hill, we visited Lake Tahoe several times in the past year, exploring everything from dog-friendly beaches to rafting and other forms of summer fun.
