Some four-legged friends love chasing snowballs and barreling through drifts. For others, chilly air and wet, heavy snow pose real challenges. When planning winter travels with your dog, start with steps that protect the whole family. Dress in warm layers. Keep chains and emergency supplies in the car. And when the snowflakes fly, follow these five tips for keeping pups safe.
1. A dog’s tolerance for cold and snow will vary depending on breed, coat, health and other factors. Just like people, pets might benefit from a waterproof dog coat or vest. If your pup seems uncomfortable, limit outdoor time in the winter.
2. Ice and salt can damage your pet’s paws, and de-icing products sometimes contain chemicals that make dogs sick. Wash or wipe down paws after walks and playtime in the snow.
3. Protect your pet with dog booties that prevent frostbite and keep ice from building up between the toes. A layer of classic Vaseline on the paws can also safeguard against sidewalk salts and cold surfaces.
4. Steer clear of frozen ponds or lakes. When dogs fall through thin ice, it can spell disaster.
5. Keep your pet close when playing in snow, and use a leash if storms blow in. Dogs can lose their scent in the snow and quickly get lost.
