Ruff recreation beckons in Redding

A Labrador Retriever on a leash stands on the sandy bank of the river in Redding, gazing upward with its mouth slightly open. The river gently flows behind under a clear blue sky, framed by lush green trees. In the corner of the scene, part of a person's shoe is visible, hinting at their presence during this outdoor outing.

The anchoring urban hub of the largely rural northeastern corner of the Golden State, Redding is adventure central. Even better yet, dogs are treated like VIPs everywhere they go in the region, also known as the Shasta Cascade. Between the fantastic hotels, scenic trails and bodies of water, Redding ranks at the top of DogTrekker’s list when it comes to places to play with our pups. Redding is a true natural wonderland.

It’s all about fresh air fun and recreation in Redding. A whopping 225 miles of trails are accessible within 15 miles of downtown Redding—many in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest. Dogs are allowed on leash anywhere a car can go in Lassen Volcanic National Park (not on the trails or backcountry), which is one of California’s lesser known treasures located less than an hour’s drive from town.

While it’s all about the natural world here, no trip to Redding is complete without a stop at the region’s most impressive manmade landmark, the Sundial Bridge, which gracefully stretches across the Sacramento River. The striking pedestrian walkway is part of the 16-mile, dog-friendly paved Sacramento River Trail tracing the river from Redding all the way to the Shasta Dam

The second largest manmade dam in the nation, Shasta Dam is another marvel, while Shasta Lake is the largest reservoir in all of California. The dog-friendly 2.4-mile Chamise Peak Trail leads to the highest spot atop the mountainous spine that separates Keswick Reservoir from Shasta Lake. Here, you can take in sweeping 360-degree views spanning the lake, dam, river and the western Cascades.

If its views of Mount Shasta you seek, spend a day splashing and hiking around Lake Siskiyou. For a lake experience closer to town, hit Whiskeytown National Recreation Area, renowned for its crystalline waters and only eight miles away.

With mountains, trails, and a river running through it, Redding is an outdoor paradise perfect for group retreats. Enjoy 300+ sunny days a year, nearby national parks, and top-notch hoteliers and venues. Whether it’s a conference, tour, or family event, Choose Redding for adventure and successful gatherings!
