Dog-walk apps

Walking is as good for you as it is for your dog, and with Walk For A Dog, a new fundraising app from WoofTrax,

every step you take translates into money earned for local shelters and rescue groups. Like most apps geared to runners, this one tracks speed, distance and duration. The difference: you enter information about your dogs and select a local shelter or rescue group to support (or let the app select one for you). Post-walk sharing with other users is highly encouraged.

WoofTrax developers say they compute donations to shelters through a proprietary algorithm that weighs number of users, number of walks, miles walked and other components. Walk For A Dog users are under no obligation to donate, but the hope is that walking for a cause will provide encouragement to become involved.

WoofTrax, based in Baltimore, Md., says it mailed donations to more than 600 shelters nationwide in June. Northern California beneficiaries include the San Francisco SPCA Adoption Center, Oakland Animal Services, Pets in Need in Redwood City and Front Street Shelter in Sacramento.
