Modoc County: High desert fun for four-legged friends

By: DogTrekker Staff
A vibrant dog park bathed in sunlight features abundant greenery with mature trees, offering ample shade for leisurely outdoor activities. In the distance is a well-equipped playground that presents an additional activity area. An inviting picnic table spreads out nearby, ideal for enjoying meals al fresco or taking relaxing breaks from play. A neatly-placed trash bin aids in maintaining the park's cleanliness for everyone's enjoyment. Dominating the scene is a generously wide dirt path gracefully curving through the expanse of grass, promising exploratory walks and lively fetch games.

Snow-topped peaks, high-desert scenery and wide-open grasslands set the stage for activities in Modoc County, which borders Oregon and Nevada in the northeast corner of the Shasta Cascade region. The west comes alive in this peaceful part of California, where turn of-the-century streetscapes and ranches are common.

The Modoc Wildlife Refuge attracts adventure travelers and wildlife watchers (more than 200 bird species live or migrate through here), and the region’s mountains and lakes provide outdoor options all year round.

Stargazers love Surprise Valley, in far northeastern California. For an extra-magical experience, book a pet-friendly room at Surprise Valley Hot Springs and enjoy a sunset soak in the adults-only tub: It’s open to adult people as well as adult dogs. Fuel up at Country Hearth in nearby Cedarville, which has outdoor tables and a wide-ranging menu.

The Modoc National Forest unfolds between Cedarville and Alturas, presenting a wild landscape with dog-friendly campgrounds, picnic areas and trails. Leashed dogs are welcome in Cave Lake Campground, a quiet, pine-ringed refuge, while the Super 8 Alturas is conveniently close to local retailers and restaurants.

To the south, just off 395, Likely Place Golf & RV Resort is a hub for golfing, hiking, fishing, stargazing and splashing around. The family-friendly RV site also welcomes dogs.
