Much of what makes California great—rugged mountains, serene lakes, top-shelf food and wine, culture, and community charm—anchors the Redding and UpState CA experience. This wide-open wonderland is dotted with all kinds of activities. Hike storied Shasta Cascade trails. Marvel at magnificent waterfalls. Get travel tips from the locals over happy hour drinks. Then, overnight in Redding and enjoy new northern California adventures tomorrow.
Redding is Shasta County’s largest community, and the Turtle Bay Museum spotlights the area’s Native American and natural histories, perfect for kids. To the north, Shasta Lake is the world’s unofficial houseboat capital. Countless companies rent vessels here, and many have dog-friendly options. Whiskeytown Lake and Trinity Lake are also great for boating, fishing or hiking with four-legged friends. (Leash rules and access vary by location, so please plan ahead!)
Spend some time exploring Shasta, Trinity and Siskiyou counties, and you’ll discover several awe-inspiring waterfalls. Whiskeytown National Recreation Area has plenty. Team DogTrekker also loves three famed falls on the McCloud River. Take the 3.8-mile round-trip route to see the Lower, Middle and Upper falls. If you’re short on time, it’s a half- mile hike to view both the Middle and Upper McCloud falls.
