Big Bear Lake puts an alpine spin on classic California adventures. Set high in the San Bernardino National Forest, just 100 miles northeast of Los Angeles, this wildly beautiful playground promises a cool escape when summer temps sizzle in the surrounding areas. Four-legged explorers are welcome along many Big Bear trails and waterways, and in several restaurants and places to stay.

Nature is Big Bear Lake’s big draw. The lake features calm, cool waters ideal for boating, canoeing, kayaking or paddleboarding. It’s also Southern California’s finest freshwater fishing spot. Wander 22 shoreline miles with your pup, or head out on the 1.5-mile Woodland Trail. This low-key loop overlooks Mount San Gorgonio, the region’s highest peak. Up for a more rigorous hike? Travel through pine, manzanita and cactus stands on the seven-mile Cougar Crest Trail.

Restaurants here offer plenty of options for families with dogs. Start the day with a smoothie from Amangela’s Sandwich & Bagel House, or fuel up on custom skillets at Old Country Inn. For lunch or dinner on the lake, try Santana & Maverick’s, The Pines Lakefront or Stella Luna – it’s known for farm-to-fork and gluten-free dishes. Nottinghams Tavern has a popular pup-friendly patio, plus happy hour specials and live music on select nights. Order a post-dinner pint at Big Bear Lake Brewing Company, or swing by Beary Bliss for frozen yogurt.

Pet-friendly lodging properties in the village include the Fireside Lodge and Holiday Inn Resort the Lodge at Big Bear Lake. Big Bear Frontier is a lakefront gem with beach access, barbecue grills, outdoor games and comfortable cabins. Businesses like Big Bear Lakefront Cabins and Big Bear Cool Rentals specialize in local vacation rentals.

Please call ahead to confirm property pet policies. And remember, much like DogTrekker’s Leave Only Paw Prints, the Care For Big Bear initiative offers simple tips for maximizing fun while minimizing the environmental impact of a visit.
