Mendocino County is a wonderous place that’s perfect for pups. History here gets measured in tree rings, and exploring might mean navigating forests by railbike, rambling on the beach or marveling at the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens’ blooms. Dogs are welcome to enjoy all these activities, and that’s just the start.
Mendocino’s delightfully dog-friendly Skunk Train follows century-old rail routes through majestic redwoods. The Fort Bragg company also has two-seater railbikes with dog trailers, so you and your pup can pedal through tranquil groves and over trestle bridges. (The railbikes have electric-assist motor options, too.)
South of Fort Bragg at the Stanford Inn, Catch A Canoe & Bicycles, Too rents bikes, kayaks, paddleboards and special outriggers with canine cruisers that accommodate four-legged friends. It’s an unforgettable way to view Big River scenery and spot harbor seals, great blue herons, eagles, river otters and other wildlife (from a safe distance, of course).
Ukiah’s Mendocino Barkery sells treats, toys, leashes and gear, and it’s among several area retailers that cater to pups. From pretty Point Arena to the craggy North Coast, plenty of restaurants have dog-friendly patios, too. Fresh seafood, seasonal produce and other farm-to-fork ingredients define the Mendocino dining experience.
