Van Sickle Bi-State Park

Lake Parkway and Park Ave., South Lake Tahoe, California

(530) 543-6037

Van Sickle Bi-State Park is a remarkable destination for dog owners seeking an outdoor adventure in the stunning landscapes of South Lake Tahoe. As the only bi-state park in the nation with a joint entrance, this expansive 575-acre park offers a unique blend of natural beauty and historical significance. The park is easily accessible from Lake Parkway, conveniently located near the Crescent V shopping center and just a short stroll from the South Shore casino district on Highway 50.

The main trail meanders beneath the Heavenly Gondola lift line and leads to a collection of historic structures that once belonged to Henry Van Sickle, dating back to the 1860s. Walking this path with your dog, you’ll get glimpses of Lake Tahoe while learning about the area’s past. The landscape shifts as you go—you’ll pass through open burn areas that are slowly recovering, then into lush green forests where the shade feels good on warmer days. It’s a genuine mix of restoration and established woodland.

Future spur trails are under construction to eventually connect with the Tahoe Rim Trail, which will open up more exploration possibilities when they’re complete. For now, the main trail gives you a solid sense of the park without overwhelming options.

Dogs need to be leashed in developed areas and around horses. Keep your dog under strict control at all times and clean up after them—the park’s pristine environment depends on it. Restrooms and parking are available at the trailhead, making it straightforward to gear up before heading out. If parking gets tight, you can also park behind Harrah’s and walk to the park entrance.

The combination of historical sites, diverse terrain, and dog-friendly access makes this a solid choice for a half-day outing. The trail isn’t strenuous, so it works well for dogs of different ages and fitness levels. Start early on weekends to avoid the crowds that naturally build as the day goes on.
