Arizmendi Bakery in San Rafael has a genuinely relaxed outdoor seating area where you can sit with your dog while drinking real coffee and eating fresh pastries. The space is comfortable and open, with enough room to spread out without feeling crowded. When we stopped by, the staff knew right away that we had a dog and were genuinely friendly about it—not performative, just naturally welcoming.

The baked goods are legitimately good. We had a croissant that was actually flaky and buttery, not the dense thing you get at most places. They also have sandwiches and other options if you want something more substantial. The coffee is solid, made by people who seem to care about what they’re doing. You’re not paying Bay Area premium prices for mediocre coffee here.

What makes it work as a dog-friendly spot is that the outdoor area isn’t squeezed onto a tiny corner of the sidewalk. There’s actual space, and it feels separate enough from the main drag that you’re not managing your dog’s anxiety about foot traffic the whole time. We saw a few other dogs there during our visit, and everyone minded their business. The staff mentioned they sometimes have dog treats available, though we didn’t see any the day we were there.

The neighborhood around it is pleasant for walking. There are residential streets with trees nearby, and it’s close enough to downtown San Rafael that you can combine a bakery visit with exploring the surrounding shops and parks. It’s the kind of place where you’re not rushed—you can actually sit and enjoy your coffee instead of speed-eating in a car.

Go in the morning if you want the best selection of baked goods. They seem to move through their inventory fairly quickly, which is a good sign about turnover and freshness.
