Back Meadow Trail

Back Meadow Trail

Back Meadow Trail

100 Verano Ave., Sonoma, California 95476

(707) 785-2377

Back Meadow Trail at Maxwell Park in Sonoma winds through mature oaks and open meadows, with enough shade and level ground that it’s genuinely comfortable even on warmer days. The trail loops through what was once the Maxwell family’s farmland, and you’ll still see old plum and apricot trees scattered throughout the property—some of them actually produce fruit, which is a nice unexpected detail when you’re walking through.

The path itself is wide and well-maintained, easy enough that dogs of any fitness level can handle it without struggle. It’s the kind of place where you can actually relax instead of constantly managing your dog around obstacles or steep sections. Leashed dogs are welcome here, and you’ll see a decent mix of people and their dogs on weekends, though it never feels crowded. The meadow sections open up nicely, so if your dog wants to sniff around or you just want to sit for a minute, there are natural places to pause.

Maxwell Park is right in Sonoma proper, which means you’re not spending an hour driving to get there. The parking area is straightforward to access, and the park has decent facilities. The whole experience has an uncrowded, genuine feel—it’s not trying to be anything other than what it is: a pleasant local trail through some nice property with actual history attached to it.

If you’re staying in Sonoma wine country and want to get your dog some exercise without the whole production of a serious hiking trip, this works well. Check the park’s website before you go to confirm current conditions and any specific rules about where you can go and when the gates are open.
