Brewery Gulch Drive winds along the bluffs overlooking Mendocino Bay, following the old Highway 1 route in a way that feels like you’ve stumbled onto a forgotten stretch of coast. You start at the intersection of Highway One and Comptche Ukiah Road, and from there the road becomes progressively quieter, which is exactly what makes it special. There’s minimal traffic, so you can actually hear the ocean and focus on the views rather than watching for cars.
The trail itself is straightforward—essentially a gentle drive or walk along what used to be the main coastal highway. The bluff-top setting means you get consistent views of Mendocino Bay without having to navigate tricky terrain. In spring, the grassy edges along the road come alive with wildflowers, and the light hits the water differently depending on the time of day. We found the afternoon light particularly nice for photography, though honestly just being out there is the point.
Since it’s a road rather than a dedicated hiking trail, it works well for dogs of all fitness levels. There’s no scrambling or steep sections to worry about. The main thing is watching for the occasional car, but they’re rare enough that you’ll likely have long stretches to yourself. The coastal air is noticeably fresher than inland Mendocino, and on clear days you can see quite far down the coast.
The quietness is what really sets this apart from more popular coastal walks. Most visitors to Mendocino head to the main town or the headlands closer to downtown, so Brewery Gulch Drive stays relatively empty. If you’re staying in wine country and want a coastal break without the crowds, this is worth the short drive out. Bring a light jacket—the ocean wind picks up in the afternoon, even when it’s warm inland.
