Chandelier Drive-Thru Tree Park sits along Highway 101 in Leggett, a small Mendocino County town surrounded by old-growth redwoods that feel genuinely remote despite being accessible by car. The main draw is obvious—a massive Coast Redwood with a tunnel carved through its trunk wide enough to drive a car through. It’s been this way since the 1930s, and the tree is still alive and growing.
Pulling through that tunnel with your dog in the car is genuinely surreal. The tree’s diameter at the base is enormous, and you realize how small your vehicle is once you’re inside it. The parking area beyond gives you space to stop and get out with your dog on a leash to walk around the base of the tree and snap photos. The surrounding grove of redwoods provides shade and a sense of being deep in the forest, even though you’re just off the highway.
The park has a small gift shop stocked with souvenirs—local crafts, redwood-themed items, and dog-related merchandise. It’s the kind of place where you might find a decent postcard or a wooden ornament without feeling like you’re in a tourist trap. There are picnic tables scattered around the property, so you can bring food and sit among the trees with your dog. It’s quieter than many state parks and less crowded than some of the more famous redwood destinations.
The whole experience moves at whatever pace you set. Some people spend twenty minutes driving through and taking one photo. Others linger for an hour, exploring the different angles through the grove and eating lunch. Your dog gets to be outside, sniff around on a leash, and experience the scale of these trees—which is something you really can’t capture in photos or video.
If you’re driving Highway 101 through Mendocino County, this is a straightforward detour that breaks up the drive and doesn’t require a long hike or special planning.
