Churn Creek Trails

1200 Minder Dr., Redding, California 96003

Churn Creek Trails in Redding offers 2.2 miles of easy walking through oak woodland with plenty of shade, and the gravel paths are gentle on dogs’ paws. We took our dog here on a warm afternoon and appreciated how the canopy kept things cool even when it was hot elsewhere in town. The terrain is genuinely flat and straightforward—no scrambling over rocks or steep sections—which made it comfortable for our older dog to keep pace without struggling.

The well-maintained gravel surface is easier on joints than harder trails, and the gentle slope means you’re not fighting gravity on the way back. We brought a collapsible water bowl since the trail doesn’t have water stations midway, and that worked well. The oak trees are beautiful, and there’s enough variety in the landscape to keep a walk interesting without being demanding. The 2.2-mile loop is long enough for a solid outing but short enough that you’re not committing to hours if you’re just looking for a quick escape from downtown Redding.

What made the visit worth planning was learning that Churn Creek connects to the nearby Lema Ranch trails, so if you want to extend your time out here, you can link routes together and explore more. That flexibility is helpful if you’re trying to figure out how much time to actually block out for your visit. We met a couple other people with dogs on the trail, and the spacing felt comfortable—populated enough that it didn’t feel isolated, but not crowded.

Bring water since there aren’t reliable sources along the route, and the unshaded sections, while minimal, can get warm in summer afternoons. Call ahead to confirm current conditions or any temporary closures, especially after heavy rains when gravel trails can get muddy. Starting early gives you the best combination of cooler temperatures and fewer people if that matters to you.
