Coronado’s Dog Beach offers leash-free fun year-round at the north end of Central Beach, right across from Sunset Park on Ocean Boulevard. It’s adjacent to Coronado’s North Island U.S. Naval Station, so you’ll notice the military presence, but it doesn’t detract from the beach experience. Parking is readily available on Ocean Boulevard and nearby streets, making it easy to grab a spot even on busy days. The walk from your car is straightforward—you’ll leash your dog for the safe crossing over Ocean Boulevard, then head down a designated pathway to the sandy shore.
Once you’re on the sand, the views are genuinely impressive. Point Loma headland stretches along to your right, and if you look left, you’ll see the iconic Hotel del Coronado rising up against the sky. The beach itself feels lively year-round, with dogs of all sizes splashing in the water, chasing balls, and socializing while their people chat on the sand.
What makes this spot work so well is that it’s genuinely set up for dogs to have a good time. The off-leash policy means your dog can actually swim and play without restriction, which is the whole point of coming to a dog beach. The water is accessible and inviting, and there’s enough sand and space that it never feels cramped even when things get busy.
Beyond the beach itself, Coronado has developed a solid network of dog-friendly spots—restaurants with outdoor seating where dogs are welcome, shops that don’t mind you bringing your dog in, and various services geared toward visitors traveling with dogs. You can find dog-friendly accommodations and pet sitters throughout the island if you need to step away for a few hours. The whole setup makes it easy to spend a full day or weekend here without your dog being left out of anything.
