The relatively new Dragoon Gulch Trail system was built with the help of many individuals and agencies. Starting at Woods Creek Park in Sonora, the trail system creates a 2.5-mile loop that works well whether you’ve got thirty minutes or a full morning. Trails travel along a natural creek, and as you climb, you’ll reach a vista that provides a spectacular view of the city and its surrounding mountain ranges.
What makes this system appealing for dog owners is the variety built into a small space. Some segments are gentle enough for a casual walk with an older dog or a young pup still building stamina. Other sections offer real elevation gain and rocky terrain if you want a strenuous hike or jog with a dog that’s up for it. You can tailor your route based on what your dog can handle that day.
The main entrance is at Woods Creek Park itself. From the Bay Area and Central Valley, take Highway 108 East to Highway 49 North into Sonora. Turn left on Woods Creek Drive (you’ll see it across from the Mother Lode Fairgrounds) and follow the signs to the trail. If you’re coming south on Highway 49 into the city, stay on 49 and turn right on Woods Creek Drive instead.
The creek running through the gulch stays fairly cool and shaded under the trees, which is nice on warmer days. Keep your dog on leash throughout—this is enforced and also makes sense given the trail proximity to the creek. Bring water for both of you since the trail can get exposed in certain sections, and remember to pack out what you pack in. The parking area at Woods Creek Park has plenty of space, and it’s easy to find the trailhead from there.
