The East Bay SPCA has helped injured, lost and abandoned animals since 1874 making 2024 its 150th Anniversary! Today they serve Alameda and Contra Costa Counties at sites in Dublin and Oakland.
The East Bay SPCA is more than a shelter. It’s a beacon of hope and a hub of community support, addressing the evolving needs of animals and people alike. Their philosophy is rooted in inclusivity, ensuring that everyone, regardless of their housing situation, income level, race, spoken language, or access to resources, can experience the profound joys of the human-animal bond.
At the heart of their mission is a commitment to making pet ownership accessible to all. The East Bay SPCA recognizes that barriers to pet ownership can be numerous and varied. By offering affordable veterinary care, including vaccinations, spay and neuter services, and wellness exams, they help ensure that pets stay healthy and in their homes. These services are essential in communities where financial constraints might otherwise prevent families from seeking necessary medical care for their pets.
Education and outreach programs play a critical role in the East Bay SPCA’s efforts. They understand that knowledge empowers pet owners and strengthens the bond between humans and animals. Through community workshops, school programs, and online resources, they provide valuable information on pet care, behavior training, and the importance of responsible pet ownership. These initiatives are designed to foster a deeper understanding of animal welfare and to cultivate a community that values and respects the lives of animals.
Furthermore, the East Bay SPCA is dedicated to addressing the specific challenges faced by underserved communities. They offer targeted services such as pet food pantries, temporary pet housing, and emergency boarding to support pet owners during times of crisis. These programs are crucial for individuals experiencing homelessness, domestic violence, or other emergencies that might jeopardize their ability to care for their pets. By providing these safety nets, the East Bay SPCA ensures that pets and their owners can stay together through difficult times.
