Greyhound Rock Beach

Greyhound Rock Beach

Greyhound Rock Beach

1551 Cabrillo Hwy., Davenport, California 95017

(831) 454-7956

Greyhound Rock Beach sits about seven miles north of Davenport, named after the distinctive mudstone sea cliffs that rise dramatically from the shoreline. The beach itself is a straightforward spot—sandy, relatively quiet, and right next to Waddell Beach if you want to explore further along this stretch of Santa Cruz County coast.

Dogs are welcome here, which is the main draw for most visitors coming with their pets. The beach is wide enough that you can walk for a decent distance without feeling crowded, even on weekends. The waves crash against those namesake cliffs, and the water is cold—typical Pacific cold—so most dogs wade rather than swim, though some will dive right in. The sandy bottom is firm and easy to walk on, and there’s something nice about the quieter vibe compared to more popular beaches.

Sunset viewing is genuinely good here. The cliffs catch the light well, and you get unobstructed views of the water. We found it peaceful in the late afternoon, with plenty of space for dogs to move around without constant interaction with other beachgoers. The wind can pick up in the evening, so bring a jacket if you’re planning to stay into dusk.

Parking is in a small lot above the beach, and the walk down is manageable with dogs. There aren’t facilities like restrooms or water fountains right on the beach, so plan accordingly. The area is pretty undeveloped—no nearby restaurants or shops—so bring what you need. If your dog enjoys a straightforward beach walk with dramatic scenery and minimal crowds, this works well. It’s not a destination beach with lots of amenities, but rather a genuine local spot where dogs can actually roam and explore without feeling like you’re managing a chaotic scene. The mudstone cliffs are worth seeing in person, especially in afternoon light.
