Lake Alpine SNO-Park sits right at the winter closure gate on Highway 4, making it one of the most accessible jump-off points for winter recreation in the Sierra Nevada. During winter months, Highway 4 is groomed for snowmobiles from the closure gate—about 2.5 miles east of Bear Valley—stretching roughly 15 miles toward the top of Ebbetts Pass and continuing on to Highland Lakes. The trail breaks into multiple segments suited for different abilities, from novice riders who want a gentler experience to experts looking for challenge. As you climb toward the pass, the scenery opens up considerably with views that make the ride worthwhile.

If you’re bringing your dog, this place offers real variety. Cross-country skiing is popular here, and the groomed highway corridor sees heavy use from nordic skiers, especially in the Lake Alpine region. Dog sledding is another option if that’s something you’re interested in exploring. There’s also plenty of space for snow play if you just want to let your dog romp around in the snow without committing to a longer outing. Snowmobilers have access to the main groomed sections, but expert riders can venture onto the ungroomed eastern side of Ebbetts Pass if they’re looking for more technical terrain.

The SNO-Park program manages these sites throughout the Sierra Nevada, and you’ll spot them by their distinctive brown highway signs. Each location provides cleared parking lots and sanitation facilities, which matters when you’re bringing a dog. Keep in mind that snow conditions vary seasonally and affect what’s actually accessible on any given day. The parks operate between November 1st and May 30th. You’ll need to purchase a parking permit before leaving your vehicle—either $15 per day or $40 for the entire season, which makes sense if you plan multiple visits.
