Lopez Lake

Lopez Lake

6800 Lopez Dr., Arroyo Grande, California 93420

(805) 788-2381

Located just ten miles east of Arroyo Grande, Lopez Lake Recreation Area spreads across 22 miles of shoreline with summer water temperatures around 70°F, making it a solid destination if you want to bring your dog along for the day or stay longer at the campground. The lake sits in the rolling hills between Highway 101 and the Santa Lucia Mountains, so you get that inland California landscape—oak trees, golden grass, and a real sense of space.

The hiking trails here vary in difficulty and length, which matters when you’re traveling with a dog. Some are short and easy loops suitable for dogs who aren’t marathon walkers, while others give you more distance if your dog has the stamina for it. You’ll find shaded picnic areas scattered throughout the park with barbecues and tables, which is handy if you want to settle in for a few hours and let your dog rest between activities. Mountain biking and equestrian trails also wind through the property, so you’ll see those users out there alongside hikers.

Fishing and boating happen on the water itself, but the real draw for most people visiting with dogs is the combination of relatively easy access and plenty of room to roam. The campground offers overnight options if you want to make a weekend of it, though you’ll want to confirm their current dog policy since those can vary seasonally.

Getting here is straightforward—take Highway 101 to the Grand Avenue exit in Arroyo Grande, then head east on Grand Avenue through town. Turn right onto Huasna Road, which becomes Lopez Drive after a couple miles. Follow Lopez Drive for about ten miles and you’ll hit the park entrance. The drive from LA is around 184 miles, and from San Francisco it’s about 254 miles north, so it works as either a weekend trip or a longer road stop if you’re traveling that stretch of the coast.
