MacKerricher State Park is a rarity in the California State Parks system in that it is more dog-friendly than most. Leashed dogs are allowed on some beaches and trails.
The park is diverse, offering habitats ranging from bluff, beach and headland to dune, tidepool, forest and wetland. Bird-watching is especially good around Cleone Lake, a tidal lagoon, and in winter and spring migrating gray whales can be sited from the headlands.
Dogs are allowed on leash in most of the park, but are prohibited on Virgin Creek Beach, the northern half of Ten Mile Beach, the Seal Rocks harbor seal pup nursery area, and the Surfwood Walk-In campground. Information about restrictions is available at the entrance station.
Camping is available at sites on three loops: West Pine, East Pine and Surfwood. Maximum trailer/camper length is 35 feet.
The park is three miles north of Fort Bragg on Highway 1, near the town of Cleone. The park encompasses much of the land west of Cleone and a strip of beach between Fort Bragg and Ten Mile River.
