McNee Ranch State Park

McNee Ranch State Park

McNee Ranch State Park, on the southern flank of Montara Mountain, offers magnificent views of the Pacific Ocean and the San Mateo County coast.

Hiking here is through exposed country along wide, multi-use fire roads. Expect to share them with cyclists (some of them going very, very fast on the downhills) and equestrians.

The eight-mile, partial loop trip to the summit of North Peak, elevation 1,898 feet, is strenuous, with about 1,800 feet elevation change.

Shorter trails are available. For something quick and easy, take the Gray Whale Cove Trail north from the main trailhead. A rest bench is the perfect place to fill your lungs with fresh air and contemplate the views.

Directions:

• From Highway 1, check your odometer at the Linda Mar traffic signal. Drive about four miles south and look for the small parking lot on the right side of the road. The trailhead is not well marked, so GPS assistance can be helpful.
