Stand and deliver! Find the spot of the notorious Wells Fargo stage robbery by the dastardly Ruggles brothers. Any part of this trail is a trip in time.
The upper portion of this paved trail lays atop the old River Road built in 1883 to connect the withering Shasta City to the Central Pacific Railroad in nearby Redding. Look for stone walls from the original construction of that route within the picturesque and rugged Middle Creek canyon.
The lower portion of the trail is located atop a railroad grade that was used to bring ore from the Iron Mountain mines to refineries in the Bay area. Now this gentle grade brings users to and from the Sacramento River Trail. Ride into the town of Old Shasta (go west on 299 mile) and checkout the Shasta State Historic Park and museum, it’s a great place for a picnic.
Please pick up after your dogs and bring plenty of drinking water.
